This movie looks like fun and please be nice about our very novice discussions/opinions about Pokemon! I did play a little Pokemon Go when it first came out and I have scene some past cartoon shorts... nothing much to really tell a newb what Pokemon is about :)

Pokemon can be very complicated when trying to explain it especially since most common knowledge comes from what you get from the anime.


Pokemon are basically the animals of their Earth, they all have their own strengths and weaknesses (think rock/paper/scissors in terms of what kinds are stronger than others) as there are different types such as Electric (Pikachu), Fire (Charizard), etc. Pokemon and humans coexist where some are pets (instead of dogs or cats they might have a pet Meowth or a Growlithe, some are used to help out with everyday life (like you see in the trailer Machamp directing traffic), and of course the most popular one: the ones trained to battle. As a Pokemon trainer you start off very young, around 10 where you choose your very first and go out on your adventure to collect more Pokemon and earn Gym Badges to prove how strong you've gotten. As a Pokemon trainer your goal is to win the Pokemon League (think Super Bowl but for Pokemon battling) to be declared that region's "very best" essentially but you can only carry up to 6 Pokemon at a time.


The world and story of Pokemon is still going on as the 8th Generation game is releasing at the end of the year and I'm sure we're close to 1000 different species by now. Only the big time fans will be able to spot them all in the trailer but there's definitely not a lot of knowledge required in order to enjoy this story which is good. Love you guys!

You know what, I LOVE how you don't know much about Pokemon and yet are open minded and enjoying this! :)

Just a small explaination: Like animals, there are many of the same Pokemon. Like different dogs, there are different Pikachus. This specific Pikachu is different from any you find in any other media, just happens this one can talk to the one guy.


As a big fan of the mainline Pokemon games on Nintendo consoles, I'm extremely happy about this movie. It's based on a spin-off game of the same name but the 2 trailers managed to strike my heart with love. In recent years, The Pokemon Company would always try to keep pushing Generation 1 Pokemon (The first 151 Pokemon) but I was getting real tired of it. This movie gave us Pokemon from pretty much all the generations (There's 7 Generations of Pokemon as of the filming of the movie which is about 800+ Pokemon) and I couldn't be happier. The world they created in the movie feels like an actual Pokemon world that feels like I could fit in the games; there are posters referencing locations from the video games/anime, and the Pokemon look amazing, better than I would ever think of! Overall super excited about this movie and I hope this does well and we get some spin-off that adapt the stories in the mainline video games, specifically Pokemon Black and White since that was a really cool story.

You were mistaken, you can't fit six pokemon in a single pokeball xD. What Tom meant was trainers can only carry up to six pokemon at a time, in seperate pokeballs.

As an lifelong Pokemon fan I'm very much excited for this movie. Started playing when I was 7 back around '99, and still play every new game that comes out. :P Caught 'em all and all that jazz.

It's quite entertaining to hear people with minimal knowledge talk about the franchise, especially things like referring to Pikachu as a "powerful" Pokemon. It's a mediocre to decent Pokemon at best, but because Pikachu is adorable (marketable) and they want Ash's Pikachu in the anime to remain relevant, they push for it to seem stronger than it really is.

But yeah! This movie and the 8th generation of games coming out at the end of the year? It's gonna be a good year for Pokemon, that's for sure!

It's not bad that you go in blind...but Pokemon is very simple and it may be better to have some context. xD
Pokémon is short for "pocket monsters", and they are basically just magical animals. The pokémon games revolve around catching them and then making them fight against other players' pokémon. The original game had 151 creatures (the plot involved around finding the legendary 150th pokémon and the villain creating an artifical 151st one via cloning) but this number has been exceeded several times as every new pokémon game adds more. The whole "gotta catch 'em all!" phrase is basically a sales sham - yes, the kids in the cartoon and games try to become "pokémon trainers" by collecting every known pokémon, but it's basically tells YOU, the viewer, to buy all the toys and become a "pokémon master" irl.

It must be wild to see this when you don't actually know Pokémon, I envy your mom and Kim! I mean they're practically normal to most people, but they're gonna get to be thrown into this world for the first time, and what a way to get your first taste :D

fun little fact behind the name "poke'mon" its what we would call a portmanteau basically the merging of 2 words making it 1 word like like breakfast and lunch would make brunch not quite the best example but yea and in this case they merge the words poket and monsters hence the term poke'ball also merging words poket and ball lol monsters stored in little balls that fit in your pocket
