"I don't want the most exciting part of my week to be taking a product out of it's box." I like that quote. A lot.

Hell yeah. I needed this, I was thinking about upgrading my DSLR but I realize that I just need to make more content and worry less about the gear. Thanks man.

We demand too much from equipment and not enough from ourselves. Some of the greatest films were shoot on practically wooden cameras. No pun intended. Kudos.

Being a T3i (well, 600D) owner myself I have always thought that my films could look way better if I could only get a better camera... But after watching this video I realized that I can make my films look way better not by upgrading the equipment, but by passing on the story in a better way. Thank you Simon for this short yet very inspiring video.

When the whole world have turned into Youtube-vlogging with gorilla pods and 4k DSRL's - it is truly great watching such a talented filmmaker.

I agree Simon, especially when it comes to filmmaking. That being said, you will learn a lot by shooting and experimenting with a camera with more features, like the GH4, and use that to be productive on set. Productivity and flexibility is valuable when shooting nowadays, especially if you want to do film and video as a living. You can experiment with 96fps, 4K, manual picture adjustments and use that to strengthen your story. Take 4K as an example: It's no secret, many creative choices are made in post. Then it's great to have the option to do things like digital zoom and stabilization. Maybe you thought a scene would be perfect handheld, but realize in post that it should have been more static (without loosing to much quality)? Or you realize that a small digital zoom towards an object would be perfect to give it more focus. It won't be the same as doing it on set off course, but it's just one of many ways to make use of that feature. As you may guess the GH4 have been such a great tool for me making all sorts of films and videos. But again, for just filmmaking I agree, I don't think it's necessary to upgrade that much :)

Those are words to live by.

I'm interested in making full length movies, but only have a tube of Pringles.

This reminds me of GAS: Gear Acquisition Syndrom... many people are so obsessed with gadgets thinking they will make them better photographers or filmmakers. Skills first... I totally agree with you. there is no point to buy a $300 luxurious pen if it's to write a shopping list with it. Go for a new tool whenever you believe that the technology of your current one holds you back.

It looks like the focus pulls on your face automatically though at around 1:31. Is that a feature on the T3i? I was thinking of upgrading to a T6s simply to have a flip screen and auto-focus. I feel like it's so time-consuming to pull focus and set the frame when I have to keep going back and checking what I recorded. Then again I'm at the T2i level. Thoughts anyone?

People that fixate on 4K seem to be stuck making travel films and other boring stuff. Everyone wants to be moved or stimulated, not impressed with pixels. This guy is right. The only thing I would disagree on is sound equipment. Bad sound is unforgivable. You need to spend at least as much as your camera or more on sound equipment.

i love people being simple, living simple, and focusing on goal/s. ( instead of being fancy, cocky, valuing image and appearances over caring about what really matters: real content )

Your channel is an example for the best Youtube can be. I consider your level headed and professional attitude an antidote to so much chatter on this website. There is no shortage of channels here that are run by amateur sales assistants to the various industries which provide the tools of our trade(s). People who go on and on about the latest, most pricy, most sophisticated technology that supposedly will turn any amateur into a stone cold pro. While a lot of that stuff is tempting and mouth watering, and obsession with gear is understandable, your attitude about before buying" is so refreshing. Thanks!

This was something I really needed to hear. You, my friend, just talked me out of buying a $900 camera because I thought it would increase my short films production value in competition with my mates. I've realized buying an expensive camera seems like a cop out where you're relying solely on the camera to do the job for you rather than inventing a good story to make a good film.

Big thumbs up
I don't do film, I do stills, I lost count of how many times I hear if I publish a reasonably good image "that's great what camera took that"
They seem not to realise that it's not cameras that take images it's photographers who take them, just like it's not hammers and chisels that build houses, it's architects and builders

Thank you so much for this video! I also use a Canon t3i, and literally just this past week I was arranging to buy a Canon 70D because I was sure that I needed it for the kinds of videos that I want to make. But since coming across your videos today, I realize there are so many ways I can improve my videos with just lighting and colour grading. Thanks for such a high quality, informative, and inspiring series.
