The way he runs is just so balanced and effortless. Always carrying the ball in 2 hands, pumping little dummies and shifting the ball so that defenders are kept guessing. He really was the complete all-rounder.

Just no weaknesses to his game. Kicking, ball handling, running, tactical, organisational, defensive... all outstanding. Probably couldn't scrummage but that's about it!

I’m 60, followed rugby as long as I can remember,

Best player I’ve seen when it comes to alround skills, some players are great in one or two areas, he could do it all.

Brilliant in attack with his running and passing game, plus that underated fend off . Copybook tackler . Kicks from both feet in general play, brilliant goal kicker, field goals, and a great temperament .

Met him, bloody nice fella to top it all off, so humble and down to earth .

I mean what a player. He just made it all look so easy. He was an absolute joy to behold and it’s sad that his time is over. He gave me such fond memories, and I’m not even a New Zealander. How could you not like him, comes across as an absolute top bloke too.

His performances in the knockout stages of the 2015 World Cup were some of the best I've ever seen. France couldn't cope with him in the QF and he kicked brilliant, decisive drop-goals in the SF and final. Was lucky enough to go to that semi vs South Africa and see so many phenomenal players grace the pitch - Carter, McCaw, Nonu, Read, B Barrett, Habana, Pollard, Matfield. So many legendary players when I look back on it.

While all the other top outhalfs of the pro era were or are exceptional at some aspects Carter was exceptional at every aspect of 10 play. Won't be matched for a long time.

More pace than I remember, great supporting lines after the pass. A lot of tens seem to wander off after shipping the pass, he seemed to always reapear in the right spot

I remember Jonathan Davies, at the end of a man of the match performance against Wales, saying he was sick of giving him man of the match because he so often did it against Wales and going off this you can see why. Best player I’ve ever seen I think

As much as I hate to admit growing up watching Wilkinson and having him as my role model in my early years playing rugby, DC is the complete package and is the identity of a 10. Its hard to see anyone come nearly as close as good Carter, definitely not my favourite but easily the best

There was a defensive play he made in the 2015 RWC that I think sets him apart from everyone else.

In the semi against South Africa, Lambie kicked a penalty in the 69th min to bring SA within 2pts (NZ 20 - 18 SA).

A minute later, NZ turned the ball over just outside the SA 22m line. Lambie then booted the ball down to inside the NZ 22m line with 4 chasers. The end result was Dan Carter calmly kicking the ball out for a lineout before anyone else could reach the ball.

However, if you watch Dan Carter's movements just as the turnover was happening - they are incredible. He spotted the danger well before anyone else, anticipated Lambie's kick and got back with time to spare before all the other quicker players could.

Whilst everyone else was reacting in the moment, he was thinking and movinh ahead of the game!

Truly special player!

He read the field in the most ethereal manner, showed strength and grace at the same time

The GOAT.. his performance against the Lions in 05 was mesmerizing. He was instrumental for us winning the 2015 World Cup.. His drop goal and that penalty that he kicked changed the momentum of that game..

Didn't even needed to watch before hitting thumbs up. GOAT and I am so happy to have been lucky enough that he was playing while I could see it live.

I appreciate so much his style because he was no freak as in much stronger or bigger or faster than the other players, it was his technique and intelligence in play that made the biggest impact.

Only thing missing are those beautiful long range tactical kicks he did.

I've been watching him since his debut for Canterbury in 2002 and I always remember him as a playmaker/ excellent kicker. I never realised that he scored that many tries and made so many runs
