Η Ακαδημία ιδρύθηκε στην Αθήνα γύρω στο 387 π.Χ. από τον Πλάτωνα, μετά το πρώτο ταξίδι του (398-390 π.Χ.) στη Σικελία. Βρισκόταν σε ένα άλσος της Ακαδήμειας, προαστίου των Αθηνών αφιερωμένου στον Αθηναίο ήρωα Ακάδημο, από το όνομα του οποίου και προήλθε η ονομασία της. Ο χώρος θεωρείτο ιερός, επειδή κατά τον μύθο ο Θησέας είχε κρύψει εκεί την Ελένη[1] και από σεβασμό για την μακρά παράδοση και την ταύτισή του με τους Διόσκουρους, οι Σπαρτιάτες δεν τον κατέστρεψαν όταν εισέβαλαν το 413 π.Χ.[2] στην Αττική

The Academy (Ancient Greek: Ἀκαδημία) was founded by Plato in c. 387 BC in Athens. Aristotle studied there for twenty years (367–347 BC) before founding his own school, the Lyceum. The Academy persisted throughout the Hellenistic period as a skeptical school, until coming to an end after the death of Philo of Larissa in 83 BC. The Platonic Academy was destroyed by the Roman dictator Sulla in 86 BC
