In 2020, Novartis paid $729 million to settle allegations that the company violated the False Claims Act (FCA) and other laws:

Kickbacks to doctors
Novartis paid doctors to prescribe its drugs at events that were presented as educational, but were actually designed to induce prescriptions. The company also paid for doctors to attend expensive dinners with meals and alcohol, and sometimes allowed doctors to bring guests who weren't prescribing physicians.

Illegal copay support
Novartis illegally paid for copay obligations for patients taking its drugs.

Novartis also paid $345 million to resolve Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) cases. The DOJ cited several factors in reaching the settlement, including the company's failure to disclose the misconduct, the nature of the offenses, and the lack of an effective compliance program.
