‼️Circular Saw Kickback‼️What is it? Why does it happen? Read Description (3 dots in upper corner)

Has this ever happened to you? Knowing and being aware of circular saw kickback is important for a beginner DIYer.

Kickback is when, instead of the saw going forwards, the saw goes backwards.

Here’s why it happened:

I had a piece of particle board underneath the plywood to support the plywood I was cutting. It’s good practice to put support under the plywood or your board when using sawhorses. But that wasn’t the problem.

The problem was the depth of my saw blade. I’ll explain why.

Before this cut, I had just cut two pieces of plywood together (well clamped, etc. - it was safe). I had my saw depth set to about 1.25”.

I forgot to readjust the saw blade depth before this cut, in which I was cutting a SINGLE 0.5” sheet of plywood. So my saw blade depth was just shy of 1.25”, and the depth of the plywood and particle board underneath was 1.25.

I nearly cut through both the plywood AND particle board (my support piece), which caused the particle board to buckle.

The buckling of the plywood and particle board together caused the kickback. Had the saw blade not been as deep and the cut had been shallower, this wouldn’t have happened.

So, for your takeaway:

1) Check your saw depth
2) Make sure your wood piece is well supported
3) Read up on your circular saw safety.

I have 2 shorts on circular saw safety - check them out!!

I haven’t even bought or used a saw yet ever, but already learning about pinch point and how to not cut like that in the middle so unsupported 😱 Not going near one until learned as much as possible about safety and techniques etc. Even then, getting a good mentor to train me! Respect of the power 🙌

It bound up falling between saw horses. You could put a couple 2x4s across the saw horses to support your work or use plywood under. Set the blade depth to the material thickness and whammy

Always support both sides of the board. Ask me how I know.

Those KREG rip guides can be very helpful, but they have some design flaws that invite these minor kicks. It happens almost every time I use the blasted thing - even when I'm expecting it.
For me, the most important thing is to HANG ON to the saw so when the kick comes it won't remove any of my body parts.

You cut in between two brace points this will always happen it will bind
Now if the cut was on the outside of the horse this will never happen the piece the saw is on always has to remain supported when making flat cuts, bcuz in this demonstration the saw has nowhere to go but to fall with the unsupported piece

Your wrist needs to be in proper alignment to control the force. Some people dont complete the cut and leave an attachment. Then goto the other side and finish the cut safely.

I have a genius idea alright: when doing DIY stuff, lets make SURE your kids can't just walk up behind you

Aww the comments are full of condescending snobs, i like how you just respond with positive comments. Good on you. Mistakes happen to all of us, the difference between you and the snobs who think they know better is they never exposed their mistakes to the internet. Thanks for showing us something us beginners can learn from.

there should be a support under the machine, so the machine doesnt weigh down the stock

See those slots in your frames? What do you think goes there?!

The support pieces were put too far the cutting path, the cutting piece was bent and binding into the blade saw.

What happened exactly so I can avoid it

The guide used would cause this everytime. A rail saw is what you need. Stop using that guide. No accuracy. Use a straight edge clamped to the peice and take the saw along that. Straight edge needs to be longer than the cut. Also the way you have the workpiece on the frames. Use two 2x4s to connect them. As the peice is cut the force on the now two peices is not even. This will cause the wood to trap and bind on thr blade!

You should never use a fence guard with a circular saw unless your pushing your piece into the blade, a track saw is the only guide that show be used for circ saws, a fence guide like yours is dangerous unless you flip the saw and turn it into a table saw, my dads a 35+ years master carpenter so hope this helps

You are focusing too much on that guide. Eyes on the moving thing that will kill you.

Totally wrong approach, clamp a straight edge for saw to ride against, That it
