FOG LIGHTS, Everything you need to know. P.1

I go into detail on what makes a FOG light a fog light. How they work, and what you should expect from a fog light. It is commonplace for people to drive on the road at night with their fog lights on when the weather is clear. In some places this is illegal. The police don't make a big deal about this since in most cases OE fog lights are not very bright and are not a problem. The problems occur when people start modding out their car and replace the fog lights with aftermarket light. In part 2 I will show the actual beam of light projected from a few different fog lights. To give you an idea of what you should look for in a fog light. I will be showing you lights such as Piaa's new LED fog light, a host of Hella fog lights, and we will take a look at the cheap Walmart entry level fog lights. Do you really need to spend hundreds of dollars or can you get away with cheaper ones. I'll see you there.
The cut off is the most important part of any Fog light. Without it you are left with a driving light. Two very different types of light,

You are a very good instructor. To the point. And quite classy. I'm 76 years old and drove for some 60 years..And you still blew me away in that short video.

Fog lights are not driving lights, they have different uses and different patterns. Anything in your rear view coming from behind are driving lights or something else that is grossly misaligned. Fog lights are low and wide and not in anyone's eyes, oncoming, or moving in the same direction. They are designed to reduce glare by illuminating the roadway below weather that causes poor visibility. Shining a high beam on falling snow is kind of like shining a flashlight in to your eyes in a mirror and this is where fogs are extremely handy. So we have a low, wide illumination pattern. Fogs not only illuminate the road directly in front of the vehicle but much farther to the sides as well, so it is easier to identify the edge of the road. As for use in fair weather, where do deer come from when they run in front of your car? The side of the road. Where do you look if you are blinded by oncoming lights? If you were taught right, the edge of the road. Where do you look when you're cornering? Get the point yet? Fog lamps most certainly have a use, in fact they are multi functional.

So, why don't we turn off the headlights and use only the fog lights in bad weather, if we want to avoid the glare coming back from the headlights? If we have both lights on, don't we lose the advantages of fog lights? There must be something I didn't get...

You are not the one who’s gonna tell me not to look cool with my foglight. Secondly, I drive on shitty roads, I need to see the potholes.

To many people selling bulbs without mentioning that one can't change light types without changing the reflectors also

I agree to a point with the color temperature. With the modern day LED optics even a 5500k-6000k LED will cut through dense fog very easily. That's why our newer LED flashlights for the fire dept are impressive. They can cut smoke like no ones business. As long as it has a good solid spot beam. I run LED headlights simply for the preference of a crisper light that gives a bit more "off lighting" to the sides. I feel my eyes fatigue more under a dull yellow halogen light and I can just barely see anything. I've adjusted my lights to not be blinding too but I feel like it gets better output. As for replacing fogs on newer cars you're definitely right. My moms 2013 explorer had a whole light bust and we have yet to replace it after months because of how hard it is to get to.

Luckily I have an F150 and I can replace the bulb without removing anything. I can turn the wheel a little to make it easier but its not necessary. I just got a set of LED projector fog lights and Im researching how to adjust them correctly.

Thanks for mentioning this stuff, but there are idiots out there that aim the fog light UP, like headlamps, and into your eyes.

Yellow lights are also better when it’s snowing cause the white light would just blend in
