Nestled on the edge of the Cotswolds, just a 10-minute drive from Swindon, Stanton Fitzwarren is a charming village with a population of around 200. Walk with me in the early morning through this quaint locale which boasts a rich history spanning over 2000 years.
The Church of England parish church of Saint Leonard, a Grade I listed building, traces its origins back to the Norman era. Its enduring presence is a testament to the village's long-standing heritage.
Stanton House, constructed in 1935 in the traditional Cotswold style for a New York businessman, symbolises 20th-century elegance. Nearby, a 19th-century cottage repurposed as a lodge adds to the historical landscape.
Throughout the centuries, the villagers of Stanton Fitzwarren have faced numerous challenges, including plagues, wars, and famines. These tumultuous times often led to the neglect of buildings, only for them to be restored or expanded during periods of prosperity.
