It's so ironic because I was doing $1 million in sales from 2010 to 2015 on eBay / Paypal and it was always seamless, fast and with little issue. I was also able to collect taxes and file them like an adult. Fast forward to now and all these hoops and fees they make you jump through and sales have flat lined for the past few years.

Proves a point too. If a company makes a change that people don't like, they'll claim "It's just this once." No, it will start the precedent that will become the standard. Every little change to "test" is really sneaking in the Precedent to allow that to become the standard sooner rather than later.

Had issues with Square and Paypal alike. A few months ago a customer charge-backed all the purchases he made over the course of an entire month and Square spent two months following "reviewing" and somehow decided to let the customer keep the merchandise and refund him the nearly 4000$ spent, and to top it all off, Square charged us a fee for every transaction they deemed us to be in the wrong for.
That kind of thing happening to smaller businesses is catastrophic. We were lucky we could take the hit but that's still insane and it really affected our outlook on just trying to be the best we can in our sector - if people can just mess with honest businesses so easily and payment aggregators will let it happen.

Something happened with streamers a while ago. Someone would donate something like $3000 or so and pay via Paypal... then do a refund. All of the sudden, the streamer is hit with an $87 fee

It is a very garbage move by a company to take percentage profits on a sale that fell through. It's honestly kinda BS they're taking more than flat fees when they provide a service that costs them pennies to do.

I deleted my Paypal account when they thought it'd be a great idea to be the speech police and fine people $2, 500 if they say the wrong things. Paypal's policy said "misinformation" and "hate speech", but also said "in [Paypal's] sole view" which means those things mean whatever they want them to and you have no means to contest it.

The thing about PayPal is, they are not a "bank." Therefore they are not regulated like a bank, and they routinely do things to people that would be illegal if they were a bank. I have a book I wrote where the royalties are paid to PayPal, so I set up the account so that any money that goes into PayPal immediately gets transferred to my bank.

A couple transactions I made recently had a notice, and I'm paraphrasing here, "To better serve our customers, our warehouse is automated and your order is being processed now. If you wish to cancel the order, call customer service after your product arrives and we will gladly issue a return authorization. All returns are subject to a restocking fee. Shipping is not refundable and you will pay for return shipping." This is a great way to protect yourself from idiots who like to buy stuff, then return it.

I am not a merchant, but I will go out of my way to not use Amazon if I can get it locally or through another vendor for a comprable price. I hate what Amazon has created.

Please search about it as it was a game changer for the entire country and small businesses.
A lot of other countries were impressed by it and are trying to implement it in their own.
funny thing, VISA and Master Card lobbied against India when we introduced UPI and asked USA govt to make Indian govt stop UPI services as it was against their "profit cut".
Every transfer using UPI system has very nominal charges.. so low that since its launch Indian Govt is bearing all the transaction expenses so anybody can transfer money completely free of cost. It worked like wonders for small businesses. Just open your phone, scan and pay using QR code.

Square held my friend’s money hostage as they closed his account without giving any reason why. This was years back.

Was a good lesson a long time ago about such apps for us

I quit selling on eBay and Etsy. After getting scammed by buyers who said "all they sent was a picture of the item" or "it was an empty box" and they get a complete refund of $500+ and I get nothing.
