Shinola has actually gotten into some hot water with the US government, they initially marketed the watches as “Made in America” when a good chunk of the watches’ components are made internationally. They changed it to “Made in Detroit” but that claim is dubious as well.

Man, we needed this video in the Watch community. It’s about time thank you! Confirmed what we always suspected about Shinola: their entire business model is built on taking advantage of people’s ignorance and tricking them into believing they’re getting something much more than they really are. I really do feel bad for all the people they’ve fooled.

I ordered one of their watches, it was on a massive sale on Amazon here in the States a couple of years ago. I kept it for about 3 days before I sent it back, and I got the Lunar Pilot instead! It was so not worth it. It felt cheap and a bunch of little misses all over it. The Bulova is a keeper.

There is the German brand STEINHART where you get a Sellita SW200, chrystal saphire glass, 300 meters for 450, - USD $ . Perfect alignement, very well made. I highly recommend that brand !!!

When I was living in Auburn Hills MI I went into the Shinola store. The watches gave me Invicta quality vibes.
There is no legal definition of Built in Detroit, since they were caught violating the requirements of Made in America.

Jody, there is a saying in the U.S., "you don't know sh-t from shinola, " meaning the subject doesn't know what they are talking about. I guess the brand is well named, because their customers don't know better.

Jody you have taken the words right out of my mouth. Shinola should be compared and priced in order to compete with Timex. I am surprised that they still exist so it is clear they have suckered many customers with their rather too high pricing for some cheap watch.

When I looked at the shinola divers the chapter rings lined up perfectly with the bezel.

I can’t say that’s true with Seiko divers sold by Macy’s, especially the Turtle.

I think Shinola really tries to lean into name recognition. In North America Shinola is a name that people have heard before, but it was a shoe polish company... The phrase "You don't know shit from Shinola"" was something that came up occasionally in movies or in conversation back in my childhood. It seems the brand founders decided to cash in on a name unrelated to their products, just to try to sell overpriced silliness.
