Zero Waste is Hard to Achieve...But Small Changes Add Up #lowwaste #shorts

Paula and Nairn started their zero waste journey after watching the 'Trashed' documentary. They immediately started reducing their waste with easy swaps like replacing plastic toothbrushes with bamboo ones. They admit that it can be challenging, especially with kids and pets, but they're determined to continue reducing their waste and making it easier for others to do the same. They started off by sharing resources online, progressed to selling zero-waste items at local markets, and finally opened a brick-and-mortar zero-waste store in Victoria, BC.

Wanting to make zero-waste options more accessible to people, Paula and Nairn price-check their products to match the mainstream grocery store prices so that buying package-free food isn't more expensive. They also have a 'take a jar leave a jar' system that makes it easier for people to show up at the store unprepared and still get everything they need. To make it happen, they accept recycling from customers, clean and sanitize it, and then make these containers available for free to any customer who walks in the door.

We love that their work isn't only on the consumer side of things. The couple has spent a lot of time creating a circular economy with their local suppliers to reuse buckets, jugs, and other containers so that they're reducing waste all the way through the supply chain.

Cost of living is so high due to what we have done in past that we need gimmicks to keep the moral high ground.

When i go to Wally World I never bag anything. Haul my goodies to the car and haul them home. Others bag everything no matter what. Sad

I keep a large nylon bag rolled up small enough to keep in my pocket so I can't forget. Got 4 from Amazon for $8.

It is great to see but realistically having everyone or even a significant percentage of the population do this will never happen.

As someone who lived both in a house and apartment I say it is much easier in a house. I give old meat to cats, and I can't keep cats in an apartment. I give old greens to the chickens. Old plants go in the garden. And we have an entire green recycling fence where we throw all kitchen waste. We recycle paper/plastic/rest/glass but in apartments how do you find space for all these containers and how do you get them down? The elevator reeks if we do that.

It seems like more stores are popping up that make zero waste living much easier snd attainable.

The store has to receive it in packaging, zero waste probably doesn’t exist.. I have a problem with how expensive these stores are making it hard for people to make the greener choice, if it’s even truly greener at all..

Ask him how he went to that store? What he did do with his old phone, tire, furniture, and clothes? Some plastic is easy and not effective, just signaling virtue.
