The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa
Holy wow, this is a good book.
Translated from Japanese, Yoko Ogawa’s The Memory Police follows an author who lives on an island that experiences loss. Every few days, something disappears from the island and from their memories. There to enforce this disappearance is the memory police, a military force intent on erasure.
It’s quietly sad, wistful, and bleak. The characters make meaningful connections, bonded by an almost innate need fr community. But at the same time, kept apart by the strict rules. Neighbor is wary of neighbor. Families are split.
Read this book. Read it. It’s beautiful and filled me with the most exquisite sadness.
