The energy shot from the BFG doesnt actively seek targets but rather react to nearby sources of argent energy, and guess what those demons are made of?

The BFG10k isn't designed to be a gun, but an amplifier, so technically it's just an attachment for the BFG9k

Well in terms of how old the gun is, the BFG was introduced and has been in doom since 1993. I was going to say the super shotgun in terms of normal weaponry has been a staple in Doom for awhile too, and it's also iconic.
