Which Tools For Data Analytics / Data Science - Excel, R, Python, SQL Databases, Tableau, Power BI

I use MS SQL to store clinical data in atomic relational level - which is impossible to quickly analyze (45 million records). So i flatten the data in logical components and then can create reports with queries. I have been searching for better solutions and am now exploring other tools for transformation and reporting. My view is the SQL data base does data really well. Transforming the data into actionable information is the goal. I had used SPSS and SAS in the past but now am working with Python, R, and Power BI. I will export to Excel for some users but I am totally opposed to any mission critical systems to rely on Excel.

We use mostly Microsoft products for BI.
SQL Server Management studio for data base.
SQL Server Reporting Services for reporting with underlying SQL stored procedures.
SSIS for ETL
with Power Query for ETL lite.
SSAS for data warehouse
Power BI for interactive dashboarding
and of course Excel.
We have the option to use Tableau, but my company discourages its use because of the cost.

I have an intermediate to advanced knowledge of excel, and a very moderate working knowledge of R. I mainly use Excel for all my data work before importing to R to visualize. My data is all sports-centric, which can range from tiny to datasets to huge ones, and from very simple visualizations to quite complex ones. I am also a journalist, so I’m wondering what the best tool for me may be moving forward? I’ve mainly identified R, Tableau, and Datawrapper as my best options given my needs. Let me know what you think

ive been using excel for data links to create dashboards and scorecards in ppt, i just completed power bi course, just started sql server course, next is tableau and python, how do i find power bi and sql projects to continue my learning? my goal is to start a career in data analytics, data visualization, ssis ssrs etc....

Great info - I really need to learn more about visualization of my data so I can understand it and make better decisions. Interesting point about the aggregation of columns aspect. I have to learn more about this. Especially the memory angle for speeding things up.

How would all of this work in a context like Google Analytics data? I wonder if they have a way to pump things out directly to Google Sheets?

I'm curious too about analyzing written texts by keyword somehow. The question is how to get the fields into Excel in the first place...

I’m having a hard time making my DAX & m code work.

Do you think I can totally “replicate” what DAX/ M code can do by using R instead??
