As a former radiator repairman: You can take cap off while it's hot, just use a heavy rag to protect your hand and don't stand too close. Then pour the water in slowly while the engine is running. Never turn hot engine off and fill radiator with cold water. When you start it that cold water hitting that hot iron will crack it. Also, do put cap back on, just to first stop. Not all the way down. If you don't water will blow out. Running heater full blast is correct.

I actually did this with a Nissan juke. Didn’t realize my coolant was gone on a long road trip. Nothing broke or blew up but all I had was water at that time and I was far away from any shop / store. Filled it with the water and as soon as I got back home I siphoned out the water and replaced it with coolant. Had zero issues after the fact for about 40, 000 miles.

This is, without doubt, the best advice for such a situation. Thanks.

We botanists had old vehicles. We carried lots of water for the one and two gallon hills we had to climb in the desert. That worked for us.

The heater trick really works.
I've seen it used on cars.
Not on mine of course, as I drive Toyotas.

That heater trick saved me a bunch of times in a car that had more electrical problems than the grid in downtown on Oʻahu.

That happened to me once a long time ago!

My car overheated so I cranked the heat up and opened the windows till the car cooled down.

Me and a friend had to do this and the car stalled in the left turn lane and we had to push it across the street. Luckily we had our skateboards with us and we went to an auto zone we bought leak prevention goop and some fluid and bought a gallon of water and we made it home no problem the leak prevention goop actually worked lol

I used to poor water in my extremely leaky 02 blazer radiator to get to work. 20 minute drive. Only had to stop once to put more water in. That was a tough illinois winter though lol.

I just pulled over and turned off my 86 corolla everytime the temp went to high. Water pump bearing was the challenge. I miss it.
