On this edition of Manned Space we remember the launch of Apollo 8 - the world's first manned deep space mission to the Moon on December 21, 1968. The prelaunch activities depicted in this video are derived from NASA video that captured the crew during training in advance of launch day. The prelaunch activities depicted DID NOT take place on the day of the launch.

On December 21, 1968 astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders became the first crew to fly aboard a Saturn V launch vehicle and the second crew to travel into space on the Apollo Command Service Module when they launched from the Kennedy Space Center. If all went as planned, they would also become the first men to leave Earth orbit and rendezvous with the Moon.

The the Apollo 8 mission was originally slated to be an Earth orbit check-out flight of the yet to be space tested Lunar Module however the Lunar Module was not ready for its mission. Apollo Program Spacecraft Office head George Low knew that without a LM to fly, the mission objectives of Apollo 8 had to change. George M Low presented to NASA managers the idea of sending Apollo 8 into space as a lunar mission. Following some convincing, NASA administrator James Webb green lighted the idea thus paving the way for one of the most audacious spaceflights in history.
