In 1998 when the Ruble collapsed while we were travelling thru RU it was scary for the people, but they survived, and the next time I was in RU in 2008 Moscow looked like totally modernized. How is that possible! Russia will survive everything!

People confuse currency with economy.

The US has financial economy and holds the privilege of managing the world reserve currency. Therefore it would be wise to believe that any huge devaluation of dollar will cause the US economy collapse.

But Russia is an industrial economy, and uses money as means for exchange and payments. Russian rubbke is not a reserve currency, so international demand for rubles is almost negligeble and irrelevant.

Russia may issue indefinite amount of rubles and the prices scale adjusts accordingly.

It went almost up to 6000 rubles per 1 USD by 1998.

Food security is all tied up in the domestic market. No one will definitely starve to death. And the higher the dollar exchange rate against the ruble, the more money is received into the country's budget from the supply of raw materials abroad. We'll figure out what to do with them here.

I'm not an economist, and I also am an American living in Russia. I see a moderate rise in grocery prices, but nothing spectacular. Life goes on pretty much as before. I feel quite confident that the ruble will again stabilize.

It doesn't matter anymore as Russia is not trading in dollars, euros, or pounds.

2008/9 was the financial crisis in the West and the whole world, Lehman Brothers in the USA collapsed, nothing primary and directly with Russian involvement, the culprit where the Junkbonds in the West. 2014 were quite mild sanctions, but even harder sanctions will bring Russia not down, the Russians are world masters in circumventing sanctions. But what will bring Russia down is the politics of MBS in Saudia Arabia, if he continues to lower the crude oil price, and the price reaches $50 per barrel then the Russian economy will start to have problems.

The dollar is strong against all currencies including the £ and euro this is because the dollar is supported as a reserve currency but in reality the dollar is a bankrupt currency. The Ruble is healthy as Russia is.

One thing I'll note is grocery prices and oil prices are terrible ways to judge inflation in Russia because Russia produces those things domestically. The exchange rate only effects the cost of imports. Also, current inflation in Russia is primarily caused by wage inflation. A lot of Russia's cheap labor supply decided to join the military for much higher salaries, pushing wages up in general. To combat inflation, Russia has implemented insanely high interest rates (21% now). This slows down economic activity drastically in the long term. They also restricted capital outflows and forced companies to convert earnings abroad into Rubles. The Russian economy isn't going to collapse and ironically ending the conflict might actually be bad for the Russian economy in that there will be increased capital outflows once capital restrictions are lifted, and a lot of soldiers might not fight jobs back at home that pay nearly as well as their current employment situation. Love your channel btw!

If Russia doesn't use dollar for foreign trade, who cares. Also Russia is export oriented economy, so cheep currency make its goods more competitive for buyers.Russia produce most of its essential goods people needs, so how cheep or expensive its currency is not important. Even without war Turkish currency lost more than half of its value, but Turkish economy is doing pretty well and nobody is talking about Turkey is disappearing or that people are dying from starvation there.

Currency exchange means nothing when a country like Russia doesn't need the dollar trade to survive. Reality is, in Russia your Ruble salary buys a lot more than your dollar salary on average. In the US, to own a home is almost a luxury, in Russia is almost a right.

Wow man, as you are saying, your problem is that you have no education. You are looking at ruble losing half of its value and saying it is all ok. 😂

RUSSIA HAS CHASED FRANCE FROM MALI, BURKINA FASO, AND NIGER. These 3 countries produce lot of gold. The Ruble is back by gold FROM Russia, mali, niger, and burkina faso. It will be difficult for the Russian economy to collapse.
