Vogue calls it mind boggling, we call it an A1 Class Act.
Welcome to the Gucci Cosmos: a travelling exhibition from the 102-year-old Italian house that lands in London. The show transforms 180 Studios, at brutalist landmark 180 The Strand, into an immersive exploration of the house archive, curated by Italian fashion critic Maria Luisa Frisa to recall the celestial patterns found in constellations and time travel through the house’s past, present and future.
It is an exhibition showcasing the fashion brand’s most iconic designs over its 102-year history.
From October 11 to December 31, 2023, 180 Studios in London is transformed into Gucci Cosmos, an immersive exhibition that explores the Italian fashion house’s rich heritage and era-defining creativity. Envisioned and designed by contemporary artist Es Devlin, Gucci Cosmos features nine immersive installations that trace the story of the House from its founding in 1921 to the present day. Visitors can journey through a constellation of archival pieces, including iconic bags, shoes, clothing, and accessories, as well as a wide array of rare and never-before-seen items.
The exhibition design by Es Devlin (find more here), transforms 180 Studios (find more here) into an immersive space exploring the rich heritage of Gucci (find more here). The show traces one of many possible constellations that connect the ideas and inventions set in motion by creative directors and artisans over the past 102 years. Italian fashion theorist and critic Maria Luisa Frisa curated the show and has assembled treasures, many of which take their first trip outside of the archive, to portray how Gucci continues to not only mirror the times but also define them.
Each world in Gucci Cosmos traces a different aspect of the Italian House, from its signature craftsmanship and timeless designs to its innovative spirit and commitment to diversity and inclusion. Through the nine installations, the story of the brand unfolds– from the elevator of a famed hotel where Guccio Gucci dreamed that one-day luggage would bear his name to the vision of the latest Gucci Ancora fashion show by Creative Director Sabato De Sarno. At the heart of Gucci Cosmos is the Cabinet of Wonders, a 3D digital experience that showcases a constellation of archival pieces in a mesmerizing display. Visitors can explore the Cabinet of Wonders at their own pace, zooming in on individual pieces to learn more about their history and significance.
