His killer got 43 Years of sentences but he only did 11 years for good behavior. WTF is good behavior

I was at that game in 94. The crowd was amazing, going wild when we won. But my uncle by marriage, who's Colombian, said that he feared for Escobar's life after that own goal. I remember saying, "Tio, would they really hurt him?" "It's just a game." He replied, "Mijo, there's people in Colombia that consider this life." So sad to hear that he was killed later.

I read about this and unfortunately he didn’t necessarily mean to score that own goal it’s just something that accidentally happened, very sad that it happened.

Great video. As a Colombian-American I know this story all too well. The one thing you left out is that many of these drug cartels threatened the entire team before each match. They were playing with the pressure of a big stage, the burden of being one of the favorites to win it all, and the burden of threats against the players and their families back home. It’s a shame, with all the threats aside they would have likely won the World Cup.

My family is Colombian, my mom and her siblings mourned this death a lot, especially my mom, she stopped liking soccer as much after this death, rest in peace legend.

I remember this incident very well and the World Cup as well, known for the infamous Baggio penalty. I was in 4th standard just having started to grow indomitable passion for soccer and sports in general.
I used to write diary and journaled this incident as this moved me a lot. I was crazy about collecting picture cards of the soccer players which came with a chewing gum called Big Fun, one card per gum.
Neither do I have the journal nor those cards.
Maybe I have but do not know where they are.
What I have are just my childhood memories which got evoked by this. Thought of sharing….

i wasnt alive when this happened, but as a Colombian I find that our country is just 2 sides, the side where Colombians are really nice and chill, and then the other side is just the robbers and absolute sad side of the country. I wish my country could be better sometimes

I didn’t know anything about this although I do remember this World Cup despite not following sports at all. I happened to be in Europe touring with a choir at the time the World Cup was being played in the US. Our tour guide came on the bus each morning telling us how the US was doing and I do remember the morning that he came on the bus telling us with great amazement that the US beat Columbia. We all just smiled politely not knowing anything about the World Cup, what teams were considered good or how amazing this was.

This story always gets me. It’s so sad that just because he made a mistake that a lot of other players have made he lost his life. He came home and took the blame for it, but because narcos lost big money and weren’t happy they killed him and i think his coach was shot as well ended up in a wheel chair.
Sometimes they wanted to play certain players and the cartel would say no he’s not playing today trying to fix their games for money, always money the root of evil
Poor Andres RIP

If Pablo Escobar was still alive in the 1994, i believe he would ve definitely step in and defend the guy. Not because they had the same name, but because he liked the sport

He scored a goal on his own net in a national soccer game and paid the price with life. That was just a sports event, but some bad people turned into this to life and death and shot him. A sad, tragic story.

I remember seeing the accidental goal as a kids. We all knew it would happen, so sad. Feel so bad for Escobar. Did not know he was that good and popular tho. Thanks for the video.
