Music theory is an important subject that all musicians should be familiar with. But for some reason, very few guitarists learn music theory. I believe that this is a mistake that you can avoid. Just like you mentioned, believing that learning theory would ruin "my style" was a huge mistake. I only learned it at 38 and it has opened up a whole new world of possibilities.

Learning by ear is not easy and I got so discouraged I almost quit. Like you said theory plus LBE is compounded.

Music Theory is so freeing and personal.After learning it from scratch up to and including The Circle Of 5ths, it is a constant rush.Being able to play it in my head away from my guitar.Beautiful.
I do pass it on to friends but I understand the frustration of the teaching itself.
I can't tell them exactly how it benefits fully until they put the work in.
It is like finding fresh fields in my mind.Truly.
And working out my own songs that I wrote, prior to theory is just amazing.
It's all about Keys for me and relates directly to Universal Language of Song.
