Kostanay region situated in the North Kazakhstan was established in 1936. The region borders on four regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Aktyubinsk, Karaganda Akmola and North-Kazakhstan regions) and three regions of the Russian Federation (Orenburg, Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions). The length of its border with the Russian Federation is 1,250 kilometers.
The region is home to over a hundred nationalities.
The territory is characterized by a relatively flat relief. The northern part is covered by south-eastern skirts of the West Siberian Lowland and the Torgai Plateau located to the south of it; the undulating plain of the Zauralskoye Plateau is in the west of the region and the spurs of Saryarka are in the south- west. The climate is extremely continental and exceptionally droughty. Winter is long, frosty with strong winds and

snowstorms and summer is hot and dry. Annual precipitation averages between 250-300 mm in the north of the region and between 240-280 mm.
Vegetation period is about 150-175 days in the north and 180 days in the south.
The interior of the region is full of natural resources: magnetite and oolitic ironstones, bauxites, brown coal, asbestos, bottom stones and brick earth, fluxing and concrete limestone, glass sand, rag stone etc. The total stock of magnetite ironstones and brown ores amounts to 15.7 billion tons. Approximately 400 deposits of natural resources and minerals have been explored, including 68 underground waters; 19 deposits of bauxites and 7 deposits of gold, one deposit of silver and one deposit of nickel have been opened.
