The watch I should hate: the Rolex Daytona

The Rolex Daytona is the watch I shouldn't like, but I do. It is hype, kinda overrated and the waiting lists are a joke (are they still 10 year? Because THAT IS A BIT MUCH). And yet, I absolutely love this watch. As a watch - as an object - not bringing in all the subjective buying experience stuff that makes this watch less likeable. The daytona might be my favourite chronograph ever made.

It's crazy that a Daytona can be 11.9 mm thick and Omega's no date Seamaster 300 is 14.2 mm. It has zero complications.

From watch base: Rolex caliber 4131 is an evolution of caliber 4130. It was introduced in 2023 and features several updates in line with other new Rolex movements, such as the Chronergy escapement, Paraflex shock absorbers, and optimized ball bearings. Aesthetic updates include an opworked rotor and a Rolex Côtes de Genève decoration.

I saw the black Daytona in person at a jewelry store. That watch actually looks good, I would get it if I had the funds for it. I’m just not a fan of how the AD’s act when you want to be put on a list for a Daytona.

The 116500 Daytona is the perfect Rolex. Size, symmetry, sport, dress. There's nothing quite like it. It's the one and only modern Rolex I own.

Explorer I, Daytona, and the new 1908 are the only watches I like from Rolex.

The price increase is being driven by the aftermarket (grey market). Charging more could reduce the waiting list.

The best thing about the Daytona to me is the proportions and overall finish. It’s small and smooth and slides under a cuff well, the oyster bracelet is a perfect sports watch bracelet and the extra polish gives it a bit of tasteful flash. It doesn’t have the date so no cyclops which polarizes people. The thing I don’t like is the dial feels a bit cramped and busy, and I think the price even at retail is pretty steep even by Rolex standards. It’s an overhyped and also overhated watch, but it is a damn good watch. People love to hate Rolex, but when you just get them because you like them and not to show off is when you really start to appreciate the brand imho.

The lume on the hands needs to be longer. To create more space and t see the red writing more often, the scissors could be decarded. It needs to be more legible.
