Ughhh 2 years later and an even worse situation. Long story short we have creepy owners who think they know hockey. Pegulas have ruined the Sabres and fortunately got lucky with the Bills.

Out of all the names to blame for this decade long massacre of a team, one name stand out in bloody, red lettering:

Instead of Pegula selling the team, they should have Kim step down as team president and hire a hockey person.

Rebuild is not done by trading picks, even if its 4th round and they traded bunch of the during the years. They rushed guys the was not ready yet. They traded picks for mediocre players and it hurt them. I think there is no quick fix in free agency or trades. It must be done properly. And I have some bad news, it needs to be done from the scratch, but by competent people or I should say GM. Skinner contract is horrible and there is no way to get rid of it, Okposo is the same. They need to start with trading next season for picks. Johansson will be good rental for other teams, Miller, Montour, McCabe, Ristolainen should be traded too. Sabres have enough cap space, so taking some awful contracts for another picks will be the way.

What went wrong is that the team went into full rebuilding around 2013-2014 and made no effort to bring in quality veterans or bottom six guys to establish the winning culture an organization needs. The coach was fired, Pominville traded, Vanek traded and everyone of worth gone for scraps in the name of the almighty tank. Then once drafted, the organization relied upon Eichel and Risto completely to carry on the mantle of Sabres hockey before they were anywhere near ready. Now the environment they play in is one where losing is seen as okay and completely stifles any prospect development, not to mention the constant coach firings making the culture even worse.

While the Sabres need to make changes and improve a lot of their game, I don’t believe that changes to ownership will do a damn thing. The owner has some important things to do, but the last thing any GM wants is an owner telling him how to run the team. Buffalo gets antsy with prospects and often times they mishandle their progression to the NHL. I think Adams has tried to stay the course with development and not fall into that trap. His trades and acquisitions have worked out mostly in favor of the team. We need to get players who are committed to winning and accountable for losses. Team growth over individual players.
