This calculus video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the first derivative test. The first derivative test can be used to locate any relative extrema in a function. When the first derivative changes from negative to positive, a relative maximum is present. When the first derivative changes from positive to negative, a relative minimum is present. The process is simplified if you create a sign chart using a number line.
