Ruskies have some interesting alien ideas, this one is a transformation trope. Well, I'm not sure it's a trope but some overseas Russian friends I knew since the 80s told me of some similar alien stories. Let me summarize what they told me and you tell me if it's as similar as I see it is. I think this alien died before it could complete its development.
The alien is in larval form or is the seed planted by an adult alien. It links to the person symbiotically (sometimes as a parasite but not as often as a body-boosting symbiote). It grows inside the person, replacing parts (this is where it diverges from this story). It's also closely linked to the mind of the host, getting closer and closer as more of the host body is replaced. The host human eventually dies but the alien, with the human mind making up most (if not all) of its mind as its own. Often, the mature alien is cosmetically human, and also often it chooses to live the life the human would, repressing its alien invasion nature because invasion was not the aliens' intention, just what the species needed to do and its "human" form was so it can live on Earth and propagate the species if not blend into Earth's natives.
One of those friends claims to be a writer now but I have yet to see his work. He does, once in a while, send me some cool short stories via email. Sometimes I find he actually plagiarized (copy-n-paste them as an email to me) them but I digress, I still enjoy them and that's beside the point.
So, was the similarity uncanny or what? Also, is this a sci-fi Russian trope or is it just my personal relationship with some specific sci-fi fans? Sputnik is on my to-see list because of them recommending it.

This movie shows how one track minded defense forces seem to be when it comes to aliens (control it, make it a WEAPON, HAHAHAHAHA) but also that this alien wouldn't have been the best comrade to humans considering that it feeds on their brains to grow so the alien is not as neutral as it seems. I think the feeding count at the end of the movie was between 3-7 since we didn't get a proper timeframe.
