He's not of Spanish descent but Italian. He's been very quiet about this in order to deceive the Spanish-speaking population. Explains a lot to me

Here's my linguistic analysis: he also sometimes pronounces the t as a /t/, and sometimes as an alveolar tap /ɾ/, like the t sound in the American English pronunciation of the word "butter." In almost all (but not all) cases, the "dee-santis" (/i/) pronunciation is accompanied by the /t/ rather than the alveolar tap. Meanwhile the "duh-santis" (/ə/) is usually accompanied by the tap. In his mind, he probably thinking that he should "pronounce the t" in DeSantis. Maybe someone told him to do this when he was a child. But the effect is that it causes him to change the pronunciation of the vowel in the first syllable of his name. Another reason why I think that it's about focusing on the t is because there are no examples of him saying "Ron Dee Sanɾis, " (dee with the tap), which would suggest that he's focusing on the "e" sound rather than the "t" sound. Meanwhile his wife always pronounces it "duh" plus "t, " something that her husband only does once, and seemingly by accident. So, Ron and Casey are not at all on the same page about the pronunciation of DeSantis. For what it's worth, my advice would be to forget about "pronouncing the T" and just say DeSantis with the "duh" syllable and the alveolar tap (like the t in american "butter"), because that is the most natural way for Americans to say it, and the way that almost everyone says it.

Some names are like that and so are some words. Sometimes it comes out a little different. It’s close enough.
