for those who don’t know: the phrase “the moon is beautiful tonight” is often used as a roundabout way of confessing in media. one of natsume soseki’s (a prominent meiji-era japanese novelist) students severely mistranslated the japanese phrase for “i love you” into “the moon looks beautiful” in english. therefore, it’s use as a confession became prominent for its subtlety and beauty. additionally, when confessed to, if you feel the same way, you might a) agree or b) say “and so are the stars” or even “but not as beautiful as the stars”—the stars here being a stand-in for the confessor.
the phrase “the sunset is beautiful” is relatively unknown to me. i suspect it is a much newer phrase that has surfaced in recent years. however, after a bit of research (and quite a bit more guesswork) i’ve come to understand it to mean “i love you, but you must let me go” or “but we cannot be together”. it’s rather poetic and i’m fairly partial to it!

"..." The man in question didn't reply but instead scowled. He doesn't know why he brought it up in the first place. Sure the scene in front of them was great if they ignore the fact that the moon illuminated the destroyed place they were standing in and that the stars had shone dimly.

"I used to read something and that line came up" Kim Dokja didn't mind the silence and he doesn't know why but perhaps it was because this would be the only time it'll ever happen. That he'll be honest with the man as he lets out his feeling. The one he, oh, so, denied.

"Do you know what it means?" He smiled far too sweet than the other liked.

'I love you' He thought to himself, he thought he could finally say it but...guess not.

And finally he spoke.

"What're you planning, Kim Dokja?"

He asked ready to knock him out if needed as he held onto his sword tightly.

Kim Dokja raised his hands in defense as he laughed.

"I'm not planning anything, Joonghyuk-ah" He said, hoping to calm down the sunfish bastard.

Yoo Joonghyuk replied, "I'm sure you are."

After some time of convincing Yoo Joonghyuk that he really wasn't trying anything. They decided to sit down not minding the blood that was splattered on the ground.

It had been already 2 days since they were there and Dokja suggested they go to a nearby mountain to watch the sunset. Now, Joonghyuk is faced with a familiar scene from 2 days ago. It wasn't night time, yet and they had time to watch the sunset near the cliff of the mountain.

"The sunset looks beautiful doesn't it?"

Kim Dokja looked at Yoo Joonghyuk as he said it. Smiling bitterly, he didn't know why but he instinctively grabbed one of Dokja's hand before he could further go up to the edge.

His hands were cold.

Cold...

'Ah'

Yoo Joonghyuk seemed to have realized something. Kim Dokja kept smiling like he had read his mind.

"Liar, " Yoo Joonghyuk paused, "You're a liar, Kim Dokja" He doesn't know why he's calling him that.

He held onto the hand tighter yet no matter how much he held on to him, he was slowly fading...

Kim Dokja laughed, "Eh, really?"

...Silence filled the air, the two contemplating whether to speak or enjoy their last moments with each other. Dokja chose the first one.

"I love you, Joonghyuk-ah" He smiled again it wasn't fake but rather genuine. He, too, couldn't help but smile despite the fact that Kim Dokja was fading.

"I love you too, you fool..." He murmured, he was sure Kim Dokja didn't hear it yet he couldn't be bothered to repeat it out loud.

For he was already gone. Though, he was sure Dokja knew what he said even if he couldn't hear it.

He watched him disappear as the sun sets too.
