Tropical Storm Elsa Strengthens into Hurricane as It Hits Florida #Shorts

This footage shows the impact of Tropical Storm Elsa as it passed through the Florida Keys and other areas of South Florida in the past 24 hours. Elsa has turned back into a Category 1 hurricane Tuesday night.

Elsa is now headed toward the Tampa area, and weather experts believe she will strengthen into a hurricane by the time she makes landfall late Tuesday or early Wednesday. Elsa had already strengthened into a hurricane late last week while moving through the Caribbean, making Elsa the first hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season.

Parts of Central Florida are also under tornado warnings. A ‘state of emergency’ from FL Gov. Ron DeSantis has covered at least 25 Florida counties. ‘Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion,’ the National Hurricane Center said Tuesday, via CBS News.

There is widespread consensus among scientific experts that the climate crisis is making many weather events—such as hurricanes and tropical storms—more frequent and more severe. Rising sea levels and warmer ocean temperatures have also been found to increase a hurricane’s intensity. 2021's hurricane season has just recently begun, but the 2020 season was the most active on record, with 30 named storms, 7 of which resulted in more than $1 billion in damages.
