This has an extra fun fact tied to it! Because tomatoes leeched into the lead plates and harmed people, it led them to believing that tomatoes were poisonous, and that why tomatoes are thrown at bad performers. They wanted to throw poisonous fruit at them cause they sucked so bad.

Honestly, Denethor is amazing. He has to deal with the stress of an entire war, the death of his son, lead poisoning, age, AND the Palantíri ALL AT ONCE, and despite all of that, he's just a bit irritable.

Actually in books he is not just corupted by palantir. There were a lot more reasons why he went mad. The only one thing that wasn't mentioned in books was the lead poisoning.
