In this video, Dr. Gayatri Devi, board-certified neurologist and author of The Spectrum of Hope: An Optimistic and New Approach to Alzheimer’s Disease, explains the role of genetics in Alzheimer’s disease. Early-onset Alzheimer’s (onset prior to age 60) has a very strong genetic component, while late-onset Alzheimer’s (age 80 or older) is largely affected by lifestyle. Early-onset Alzheimer’s cannot be prevented if the gene is inherited, but less than 1% of all people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s have the early-onset variety. Late-onset Alzheimer’s can be slowed or prevented by making lifestyle modifications.
