Mark Gatiss is correct. "Big Ben" is the name of the bell housed inside the tower not the tower itself.

The current name of the tower is The Elizabeth Tower (previously called St. Stephen's Tower). Despite it not being the name of the tower, many people frequently refer to the structure as being "Big Ben."

With the exception of this posting, I have given up on correcting people because they persist in being wrong.

So, if Doyle first thought naming Sherlock Sherringford and these days the possible other brother "Sherrinford" is our main problem, maybe Mycroft was calling Sherlock, Sherrinford for some safety? Cause they said they both know the name Sherringford which is Doyle's first name idea to give Sherlock. They might have used this name for a little trick?
