What do we think about domestic missionaries? Oh my God. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, domestic missionaries aren't just missionaries, they're people who raise money to stay here in this country, where they could just get a fucking job. I used to find this life choice repellent, I guess I still do, but I've changed my attitude about it. I'm actually kind of impressed now.

These people have figured out how to hack life. For most of us, in order to get by, money is required. There are some exceptions, but that's basically the rule. These folks are like, "Why get a job when I can just ask for the money?" It's like panhandling times 100.

Obviously I'm impressed. To believe in something so much, that you are not embarrassed to go ask other adults to pay for you to live suburbs. Can you imagine being a missionary and living in Edina? The rest of us have jobs and these guys are like, "Fuck that. If I have a job and I have a boss, people will be able to tell how well I'm doing." There's no KPIs for being a missionary. "How many people did you save today, Sandra?" "That's in the hands of the Lord."

In our area, missionaries serve domestically when they have challenges that preclude them from serving abroad. I work at an environmental education nonprofit and we sponsor several domestic missionaries. I actually love it! They are consistent hardworking volunteers who maintain our trails. They’ve typically struggled with anxiety, depression, or developmental/behavioral “problems”. The amount of growth and confidence I’ve seen develop in them has been incredible to watch, and def makes it feel like an even exchange as opposed to exploitative.

My ex-husband's parents have been missionaries living in the suburbs of Dallas, TX for like 20 years. They work at a local office for a Bible Translation organization.
The parents are generally responsible adults but their son, my ex, inadvertently grew up with the attitude that money will always come from somewhere even if you don't have a job.

I did this during highschool. It's a decent side hustle. And like PT Barnum said, "There's a sucker born every minute".

Ngl, as a non-religious non-profit worker I felt weird about his description 😅 Like technically we also fundraise to be able to stay in the country, but at least I’m trying to actively solve or address systemic social problems lol

I used to be a stripper, and it too felt like glorified panhandling haha

Can I be an agnostic deist missionary? "Do you have a few moments to talk about a mysterious nebulous creator that I think likely exists?"

It’s hard to even imagine having a job and living in Edina.

I don't know rn how I feel about the whole missionary concept, so I'll only comment on the financial. The opposite side of the coin is that there are folks with the financial ability to give -- and -- the need or desire for some tax relief. My brother-in-law has spent his career working for Young Life. While there isn't a soul count accountability, there is absolutely accountability to be doing one's job -- to the organization, the local board, and the parents of the youth. And in his case, he is 💯 when it comes to caring about the futures of his kids.

Now do one on artists, musicians, and the overwhelming majority of college professors.

Didn't know that was happening. As Jimmy McGill was told there are sheep and there are wolves choose wisely what you want to be.

Missionaries? How about every pastor, minister, preacher, etc. out there.

Missionaries provide a service and ask for an offering if you want to. It’s like getting a shoe shine and the guy asks you to pay what you feel like. Believe it or not, many people have benefited from the hands of people like these, me included. Whether it’s a valid job or not is totally up to you, but I’ve never heard someone literally complain about their existence.

As much as I may not agree with the concept of a domestic missionary, representing it as “not a job” is an obvious misrepresentation. Misrepresenting an argument because you do not agree with it still diminishes your argument, which has the unfortunate consequence of strengthening the other side. 😢

People are giving them money. I know a young couple. Have a baby. Panhandling makes them more an hour than minimum wage.
I know a 60 year old who has needed money to visit his sick brother for three years.

I mean. Its basically work though to try and get people to give you money to sustain your living… so at that point why not have a job?

I have more of a problem with the nonexistent biblical term itself. The twenty-first century concept of missionary simply didn't exist in the first century. I want to tell them to go make some tents like Paul the apostle. And even he didn't use the term missionary.

How exactly is this different than having a government job.🤔
