I have a question, did you learn Japanese yourself or could you speak it beforehand? If you taught yourself, what kind of resources did you use?

I really want to learn Japanese but other than learning hiragana/katagana/kanji I don't know where to begin. Especially since I primarily want to learn to understand it more than read it. I've heard many terrible things about duolingo for Japanese, so I'm wondering if you have any other advice? Thank you as always!!!
