Where I’m from in the USA those kinds of thing are pretty common as well. Incase anyone is confused, a quarter would refer to 15 minutes. So a quarter past 8 is 8:15. You take a quarter from an hour, which would be 60 (minutes).

8:15, in my country by the way, this is the UK, if you say 7:45 that is 15 minutes to ? because a quarter in our country is 15 and half is 30 and quarter to is 45

What? Iam American and that makes perfect sense, so the UK says the same as us, is this for non English speakers or just the UK cause that’s the only way I’d think it would make sense. Who doesn’t know what a quarter past 8 means unless you don’t speak English.

My grandmother used to say to me things like “it’s five and twenty past/it’s five and twenty to’ an hour.
[Example: 4:25 or 8:45 - both 25 minutes past or to]
I hated learning the time. It confused me to the point of crying.
