My great-grandfather, and grandfather, had the Herrington grocery on East Innes St. in Salisbury, NC at the time that Otto was killed right across the street from it.

1st time I saw Doc play he fingerpicked a tune but before explained he only used 2 fingers, not the traditional 3pick. If you need to hear another fingerpicked tune listen to his Deep River Blues. You’ll shake your head with only 2 fingers. It’s difficult to actually listen to his tunes while attempting to figure out just how he does ‘em. Gotta relearn how to listen. Rest easy Doc.

I love these songs that doc Watson pulls out of his hat. So a lot of songwriters today, when they get a good one, they write it down in some form. Doc must have relied heavily on transcript through recording and probably did a lot of writing by feel! Blindness becomes an advantage in the performance of good music. What years I believed sad that Doc was blind. AND THAT IS WHAT MUSIC DOES. IT TURNS POTENTIAL SADNESS INTO JOY. YOU MIGHT SAY IT'S PARADOXICAL. It becomes the flipped coin of fate:love vs hate. And now look at Doc's student Billy Strings!! KNOCKING THEM DEAD AT THE BOX OFFICE.
