When the Developer Team Chooses Gameplay over Realism

This is Helldivers 2 gameplay

I don't know how to feel about this, of course it fixes something that's why they did it and gameplay is more important than small details, but part of me is still sad about this change.

Of course if it enhances the gameplay, fixes some problems I have no issues with this change. Gameplay first, details second imo. But I'm kind of curious that if they changed it knowingly or did they really thought their own intended feature was a bug.

This is actually still in the game for quite a few weapons, although they are support weapons, such as the anti materiel rifle, railgun and heavy machine gun.

Well the problem is this “feature” existed over any range. Meaning at point blank to 200 meters your shot lands below your crosshair. When in reality this really only appears at very close ranges as you would normally range the sights to match the shot at set distances. So it is annoying when you’re trying to snipe a small bot head long range and you miss cause your shot lands below. And most players don’t like this.

You are forgetting to mention that many scopes were also misaligned horizontally, so even if they were going for realism, the scopes were still borked and ruined the gameplay.

This video is somewhat misleading. You make it sound like a bunch of people didn't understand height over bore, when in reality the problem was that the whole gun physics system wasn't working properly, and some guns weren't zeroed right. The following is from my testing around early May.

This issue was actually twofold. One part of this was every sight being misaligned *horizontally*, unless the player was aiming exactly 20° "off-center". When standing or crouching you were always aiming at 0°, which made it so every single weapon was shooting slightly to the left in first person, though it was more noticeable the higher your weapon zoom was (hence why people were bashing the AMR specifically). And going back to the 20° thing, you could actually make guns shoot straight by going prone and aiming in a specific direction.

The 2nd part was the reticle not being centered on the screen for some specific weapons (HMG is one of them, not sure what else was affected). You could very easily see it back then by enabling an overlay crosshair and aiming in first person. You'd see that the crosshair reticle would be way above the middle of the screen.

From what I can see now, every reticle is centered properly no matter the aiming direction, tho I haven't done extensive testing.

its like there was one team that made this mechanic, they left, and then a new team took over thinking it was a bug

where is this kind of passion in modern shooters?

That explain why I felt like a noob after the patch, wondering why my aim (after training it for 4 months) was so terrible.

As a gun nerd I found out about this on my own and it made me love the game even more, I love all the work they put into the details.

Height over bore & bullet drop made things more interesting & realistic, it was annoying sometimes but u learn to compensate for it, and who is making high precision shots anyway?

What I didn’t like was people saying “Ha! See? We were right, the sights were misaligned and it’s not height over bore” when this was announced.

Much prefer gameplay over realism as its not like we're in VR haptic feedback suits lol

Helldiver weapons not being zeroed to any specific range felt a little weird. I'd rather have the shot come out of the scope than be perpetually misaligned, but in an ideal world your scope setting (25m, 50m, etc) would have also been the range at which the bullet strikes the centre of the crosshair.

I think generally unless you are implementing stuff like bullet drop, it’s fine to see and implement a scope as a “bullet go here” mark. The finer points of optics are cool but absolutely not necessary to play a fun shooty fun game. There are plenty of fun more realistic games out there, so in a game that isn’t fixed on realism as its core, gameplay expectation trumps minor details

First of all, unless you live in the US most players never held or seen a gun irl (inc me) and wouldn't understand this
Second, like many pointed out scopes where also mis aligned, combine those 2 and people dont know where they shoot at

I dunno why they removed it, sure it might be weird for some, but that just gives the game a higher skill ceiling on top of being more realistic

Thats why in real life sights are aligned to look slightly downward and hence the adjustments needing to be made... IF the sight was perfectly parallel you wouldn't hit shit

IRL scopes are also adjusted to point where the bullet will hit at a specific distance. Without that I am glad they removed the height over bore.

Gotta give it to AH. They not only came out with the best patch drop but they designed a whole system to manage what changes they will make in the future.
