As a guy who has played football from the moment I could walk, and majority of that being as a Defender, i cannot explain the thrill and excitement this video awakens in me. This makes me want to defend. Goals don’t matter to me. A nice pass is always enjoyed, but defending, being a safety pillar for your team and having everyone trust in you as the last line of defence before the keeper… that is an ineffable feeling that makes my eyes light up and my heart pound. God I love this game

Everyone loves seeing an attacker make a defender look stupid, but I think its way more satisfying watching a defender make an attacker look stupid, and no one did that more consistently than Maldini. Greatest defender of all time in my opinion.

The best compliment I ever received was by a forward from an opposing team. He told me I played like Maldini. I didn't know who that was (I'm American and played because I needed something to do in between football and basketball) I remember him telling me everytime his team played ours he knew every inch of the pitch was going to be hard earned. I looked up Maldini and right away he became my favorite player of all time. I tried to model my game after his. I was never as great technically with the ball as he was but my positioning was always on point and my tackles were never dirty. Much respect to the world's most beautiful sport

Paolo Maldini, a legend as a defender and a genius of fair play. 902 appearances, 92 yellow cards and only 3 red cards in his 25 years at A.C Milan. In his 16 years of international career Maldini had 126 caps and only 9 yellow cards.

Maldini perfected the slide tackle. As a kid growing up in italy he inspired me to play at left back. His technique was stunning. And at his peak, he had pace to burn .

I learned how to slide tackled by just watching hours of maldini tapes. He had such a great technique and timing that when slid he drops or hides the other leg perfectly so he couldn’t hurt the opponents legs. Something that has been lost in todays football. Too many dirty tackles. Maldini was aggressive but it came with such grace when he did it. He can slide tackle from all angles like if his legs were like a whip lash that came out of no where to snatch the ball.
