Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K - Why I don’t shoot in UHD

I wanted to share why I believe you never should shoot in UHD on the Blackmagic Pocket 4k camera. In 4K Dci you actually gain pixels on both the left and right side of the sensor which you seldom do with other cameras.

I have the BMPCC 4K, and shooting in 1080p is sharp enough for me. 1080p is great in this camera.

Correct me if i am wrong, I`ll try to explain what you want to tell others from a different side and understand it myself)
So if i have 15 mm lens and shoot in 4k, my image will be like 15mm lens see it. And if i shoot on that 15mm lens in UHD, i will have a picture of 16mm lens.
Because UHD cuts 6, 67% of 4K image on the wide side. 15mm lens in UHD will be 15x1, 0667=16mm. it's a rough calculation because I don't consider crop factor of M43.

The text in your GH5 sample is switched. I think, the top picture is UHD and the bottom is DCI.

Hello, i had a canon 5d mark 3 used to use it for dance videos, then i changed to blackmagic pocket 4K, i bought an adapter viltron mount EF-M2 II 0.71x, now I'm using Samyang 16 MM, the focus is very close the colors are so faded no light unless i open the lens or hight ISO, the the footage is not wide anymore like it was with canon 5d mark III

I don't understand why the Blackmagic cameras window when lowering resolution from 4.6k and such. Doesn't make sense. Sonys like the A7S and A7R don't do that. When I shot with the the Sony cameras I could shoot 4k or HD without the field of view changing, which is what happens when the the camera crops or windows. It's just strange. Can someone explain why this happens with the BM cameras.

I don't really understand what you are trying to say? Surely if you get more pixels in the right place that makes it way better? Like you said more framing options and stabilisation options?

Also DCI is just cooler haha. I shoot on an A7SII and I actually make my compositions DCI aspect and enlarge my video to 107% don't tell anybody :) That extra width is totally moticable and makes my vlogs so extra epic ;)

Well, in a run and gun situation I can understand... but in a production situation not at all. You need to plan your compositions ahead of time and a different image ratio plays a crucial roll on the final look. So I take your advise as a grane of salt.

How is this even a debateble topic? He never said its bad how BM crops
the sides for uhd rather than the top and the bottom for dci. Reason for
that is that the p4ks sensor is bigger than the one in the gh5. But the
same size as in the gh5s, which uses the same sensor as a multi
aspect ratio sensor, giving you the max possible hight and width in both
uhd and dci. meaning you actually get a bigger uhd image out of the gh5s than
out of the p4k, but the same dci image. ( Nobody follows this, I know)
