An explosion and two-alarm fire in Gaithersburg, Maryland, demolished a portion of at least one residential building Wednesday and sent at least 10 people to hospitals, including four children.

Officials said the blast tore through the Potomac Oaks Condominium in Gaithersburg just after 8:30 A.M.

The fire quickly went to a second alarm but was extinguished within about 40 minutes.

Officials said two adults were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The cause of the fire and explosion is under investigation, but officials said there was what appeared to be a "gas-fed" fire in the building's basement.
