I'd argue 1.19.1 or whenever they implemented the reporting system is the worst update.

Honestly my biggest gripe with the new combat system ever since it was introduced, is the fact that it is not intuiitive. Nothing stops you from spam-clicking, but if you do you do zero damage. If you are a new player, you have absolutely no way of knowing that this is how the system works. I wish they would have opted with just a slight shorter cooldown, and made it so that you cannot punch at all while on the cooldown

i hate when people are trying to defend the old combat, and their main talking point is "high cps isnt *that* advantageous in pvp"

because it is. the faster you click, the better you do. you talk about missing one click, and how it could be the end of your battle. there should never be a reward for just having the capability to physically outperform someone, rather than mentally. my max cps is like 5, its impossible for me to actually play competitively online without getting arthritis (cant even enjoy bedwars). cps matters like hell, especially when you're trying to play online because SO MANY PEOPLE ARE USING AUTOCLICKERS. you know what would make autoclickers less advantageous? a cooldown that makes you weaker when you dont listen to it.

theres no other game i play where one of the reasons you can lose is "oh you didnt click fast enough, but they did".

2:59 It actually made bows basically useless since shields block 100% projectile damage and can reflect arrows over a limited distance. Bows were made even more useless by making mending and infinity mutually exclusive, and then by the release of crossbows since crossbows have the piercing enchant that goes through raised shields.

Also tipped arrows are very popular and hugely used for endgame pvp. Potion effects such as weakness, slowness, poison are very valuable. Even niche potions like arrows of healing, harming, slow falling and jump boost have their place. They are very accessible through a master fletcher villager, so you don't even need to farm ender dragon that much to get tipped arrows

1.9's changes for me always felt underdeveloped, like they were pushed out before good testing and QA could be done. They're... fine enough I guess. Though they needed a lot more to them to make the combat not feel like it was just a change that added a timer to your swings and an annoying sweep effect that made neutral mobs angry at you if you were trying to hit something else. I think if they had added a larger variety of weapons, and maybe even some unique armor with different effects to the existing sets, then it could have made combat way more interesting, but all it really achieved was adding some tedium to it that doesn't need to be there.

As someone who frequently played on servers in the 1.8 days, I don't miss the old combat system at all. The worst part of the update for me was the server community refusing to move on from 1.8. I eventually lost interest in big servers and pvp entirely, and now I mostly play singleplayer or on the occasional small smp. For me 1.13 was the point I decided those servers weren't worth my time anymore.

Honestly I think if the combat update released alongside the crossbow I think people would have liked it far more. The crossbow for me breathed life into the new combat system combined with stuff like firing off 4+ crossbow into someone to burst them down, harming arrows with multishot to create a shotgun of sorts or loading in fireworks to become a carpet bomber. The trident would have also been nice addition.

I don’t think it was “bad”. What I think it was was it was the first update that Microsoft did and it fundamentally changed something drastically so people hoped on the “Microsoft is gonna ruin our game”. I’ve tried both and I like the newer version better

i still think to this day that old pvp was basically brain dead spamming... no seriuosly i hated that and still hate that system it just doesn't have any subtance to it. by the other hand new combat has more to offer axes are stronger than swords but they are a lot slower tridents are more powerfull too but still slow aaaand has more uses also axes now plays a major role into combating players since they can dissable shields also typed arrows are one the best additions too being able to deal both fire AND poison damage while hitting hard with power 5 to a full protection 4 netherite player is a dream also weakness arrows are way worthier than splash potions in order to cure villagers for 3 potions you get 24 or 64 on bedrock/legacy and 3DS by using a cauldron, just shooting them with little to no charge makes the trick

The elytra not having the firework rocket feature, and people had to shoot themselves with bows made it feel pointless when it was added in

The beetroot and beetroot stew already existed in Bedrock Edition, so adding them to Java was just a parity fix. Blame the Bedrock devs for adding a useless food item!

Personally, I LOVE the new sword-sweep attack. If people dislike it, just remember: Baby Zombies were a thing before this update. And they were LETHAL before the sweep was added!

i honestly think the new combat system is good for some gamemodes and old combat is for bedwars and others, in survival i prefer new combat since its much more fun than the old combat.

I was on the fence until I learned that 1.9 introduced Beetroot. This is such a useless vegetable in the game currently. So impractical to turn into food and won't even stack.

As someone who enjoys PVE, I actually like the 1.9 combat. I find PVE more fun and enjoyable with 1.9 combat than 1.8 combat. I've played some pve maps such as Shock Arena, and trust me if you have to deal with like 5 skeletons at the same time even if a shield you're not out of the woods, and this is because unlike the 1.8 sword blocking, shielding doesn't block any attacks that are not coming from in front of you, so that means if you're preparing to block and arrow, a zombie for example could very well ambush from behind and hit you. I indeed had to like calculate timings of when each skeleton shoot so that I can face the skeletons at the right timing to block their arrow. Obviously this isn't gonna happen in survival, but I anyways barely even play survival, it's not my cup of tea.

I'm not a big fan of PVP (mainly cz I actually suck at it, both 1.8 and 1.9 combats), however I do agree that for PVP 1.8 combat is better. But let's be honest, I don't see why people just stay in 1.8 (ofc if they only play for PVP that makes sense but I bet not everyone only does PVP), they could, say go to a later version when they play survival and if they want PVP or smth like playing on Hypixel they log on 1.8, plain and simple. I think that this makes sense.

i wish the weapons were more diverse if they were gonna do all that, maybe add a dagger and a rapier or something that trades off range and damage on different scales

I gotta say I'm getting tired of the old narrative of 1.9 combat changes being so bad. Yes, the massively talented players and YTers have made amazing strides in understanding and execution of the 1.8- combat mechanics, but for 99% of players it was just spam clicking and whoever had the lower ping won. The new combat is a lot more vast but also more shallow which leaves it more accessible, and I think has been one of the major points in allowing the game to reach the massive audience it has

Not notch, but Microsoft made 1.9, This is why it was soo bad.
