The Excavation Process: How We Excavate

This video features discussion of the kinds of tools used to excavate at the Cooper's Ferry site. Also, the effect of animal burrowing on archeological deposits and how they are handled during the excavation process is discussed. The infilled tunnels left behind by burrowing animals are called krotovina (sounds like crow-toe-vee-na).

Dr. Loren Davis, Associate Professor,
at Oregon State University and David Sisson, Archeologist, at the BLM Cottonwood Field Office
uncover artifacts that help us understand what life was like for people who occupied the lower Salmon River Canyon thousands of years ago.

watching this group of people scratching cultural artifacts out of the ground with breathless care is so heartwarming.

When you're talking about archaeology, the most important tool you saw was the trowel he was using. Specifically it was a marshalltown, considered by most american archaeologists to be the gold standard and, in fact, a status symbol in the field. Those can be purchased online, or in stores like rural king.

The city of San Francisco has a law that whenever a building is torn down
before construction of the new commences, all work stops & the contractor
has to notify University of California & they send in a team & do a historic
excavation of the site as SF is history rich.

The first rule of treasure hunting is 1 inch depth = 10 years of history. + / - depending on the soil. What is your experience with this equation?

*What is taught in Archaeology for "the Digger" to protect their Back? How to physically position oneself when digging?*

I would appreciate this information.
