For a couple great sequels of other historic railwaymen, here's a few more names to look out for:
John Axon: Stayed to try and stop his runaway engine despite a cab filled with scalding steam.
Jesus Garcia: Drove his burning dynamite train out of town knowing it and he would be blown to bits; had a town renamed and a national holiday in his honor. The Casey Jones of Mexico.
Andre Tanguy: Warned passengers to evacuate his commuter train while starring at a runaway train heading straight for him.

Johnny Cash: “Who are you?”
Casey Jones: “I’m the subject of your song about trains.”
Cash: “Do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down?”

On that note (pun intended), I feel like Johnny Cash’s love of trains would make for a good video. He even made a full concept album about a train journey, known as ‘Ride That Train’.

Good summary of the truth and myth surrounding Casey! I've always wished someone would make a high-budget film based on Casey's life, culminating in the famous crash. It's a pity that none of the songs about him have come anywhere close to an accurate account of the story.

I've always looked up to Casey Jones even though he's had a tragic end

Have any of you seen that Ghostbusters episode about Casey Jones? In it, his ghost comes back and tries to complete his last journey, so he can try and avoid the crash.

"reckless" I love how railroad historians like to say how much of a problem Casey could be. While at the time the railroad companies basically allowed for that sort of speeding as long as someone wasn't caught by railroad regulators and inspectors.

It really isn't helped that to avoid responsibility/paying out insurance to Casey's widow- the Illinois Central heavily emphasized Casey's history of speeding and recklessness and minimized their own punitive policies for being late (this was a problem with American railroads and was not unique to the CI, happened with the legendary "wreck of the old 97" crash as well), resulting in that on the books- Casey was a problem. When in reality the station master's/line workers knew Casey could be counted to get the job done on time- and of course the man was reliable enough that even in death he could save many lives.

That said, this is probably one of the most fair/realistic accounts of Jones' life and legendary deed. No concealing of Casey's shortcomings, and no over lionization of what really was a great tragedy.

Fantastic vid!

Being a Memphian I appreciate you retelling this tale.
There is a little museum in Jackson Tennessee dedicated to Casey.

3:48 Ok 75 to 35 in that SMALL of a time frame is impressive, as if braving running into 4 wagons.

I first heard of Casey Jones via a cartoon short called the brave engineer. I think Disney produced it.
