Years ago, when I worked part time at Home Depot, they had a big professional shelving unit reduced by a lot, plus my employee discount. I did something similar. I've been using it for close to 20 years and am able to start a lot of seedling every year, all for less than $100 ($5 a year), including the cheap light fixtures. I am now upgrading to LED lights when the old ones stop working. I was already old at the time, a project that anyone can do.

We live in the boonies here in West Virginia, and my 14 year old is looking for ways to make money. I think a half dozen grow light setups would make a nice starter plant setup.
I drive truck over the road, but love the idea of a garden.
I think it would be a great learning experience for him too. Teach a little responsibility, plus earn money.

That's a nice, compact setup. I made a grow light out of three LED headlights that are 6, 500K color and 8, 000 lumens each, and added a cheap LED grow light for a little orangey light for blooms. I have to start my seeds around Christmas here, to get them ready to go out in early March.

I just bought one of these shelves at an estate sale for this very reason. Nice to see how you have yours set up. I plan to start my seeds for the small garden in my yard, then I want to grow patio tomatoes and lettuces year round on it.

Surround it in space blanket "curtains" and you have a grow tent that holds in more heat and light.

I have several of these shelves. Some are in the basement for growing plants and one is upstairs for growing micro greens. I add micro greens to my soups as a topping, my salads and sandwiches. The shelves don’t support enough weight for DWC tubs for hydroponics though. I have tables for the deep water culture tubs. Each tub has about 2-3 gallon of water each.

Great light and shelf, I have the same set up. Being able to plug them together is great, I think six together is the max.

The perfect solution, I'd like to use this to continue my hydroponic setup. Simply replace those seedling trays with low profile containers with lids drilled for net cups and grow the plants right in the same setup.
