How To Install (Or Move!) Steam Games To An External Drive

In this video, I show how to move Steam games to an external drive and how to install Steam games to an external drive.

With a recent (January 2017) update, you can now move Steam games to another drive, without needing to download them again or reinstall! This video shows, step-by-step, how to install Steam games on another drive and how to move Steam games to another drive. You can use this method to put Steam games on an external hard drive, flash drive, or USB stick.

In fact, one of the cheapest ways to add more storage is to install steam games on a USB drive!

For anyone wondering how to do this now, just go to Settings > Storage > Tap on the button on top to add new drive

That may have worked in 2017... However, now it is different and I actually ended up figuring it out on my own shortly after realizing how outdated this was. So for anybody looking to do it who hasn't done it before in 2024 here is how.

First part still applies:
Go to steam on the top left.
Click Settings.

Here's where it is a little different:
Click Storage on the left.
Click the Down Arrow drop down on the upper right hand corner next to your OS Drive.

Last but not least:
Click add Drive and select your drive.

All you have to do to get the game there is to go to your library select download and select the drive. :)

Hope that helps someone out there. If your internet is a bit slow it will take a while to reserve space and download the game but it does work fine.
