If YOU Don’t Know This Fly, YOU’RE Missing Out!

Most of us know the Woolly Bugger, created by Russell Blessing back in 1967. He designed the fly to mimic Dobsonfly larva for smallmouth bass and later added the marabou tail that gave it its signature look. Despite not being a hardcore fly tier at the time, it’s now one of the most well-known and successful fly patterns out there, inspiring hundreds of variations. This version is close to the original, minus the grizzly hackle (the original was black) and, of course, without UV resin. If you don’t know this pattern, I’m not sure what rock you’ve been under, but you should definitely give it a try! Modern versions often add wire to increase durability, so I would suggest at least doing that as well.

The Woolly Worm fly has been around for hundreds of years. I was tying them in the mid/late 60's, with dark brown hackle and olive chenille (long hackle fibers for the tail), as a nymph imitation for eastern Washington lakes. While the name Woolly Bugger was evidently published first in 1967, the fly with that name was not appreciably different from the historical version known as the Woolly Worm.

The classic wollybugger. I'm convinced there's not a fish in Missouri that thing won't catch.

The flies are great. But I truly hate the voice-overs. Why aren't you just talking normal.
