Take Your Chess Skills To The Next Level With High-Quality Courses

In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov teaches you a really powerful chess opening that will scare your opponents - it's called the Tiger's Trap! It happens in the English Opening, the Reversed Sicilian to be precise, which happens after the opening moves: 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.g3.

Here White is aiming to fianchetto the bishop with Bg2 and then castle kingside. Black's most common responses are 4...Bb4 which is the mainline and also leads to the Tiger's Trap, 4...Bc5, and 4...d5. And there are some really cool traps in all these variations.

Looks to me like QF5+ would be mate! The rook covers escape squares on 6th rank, Q got 5th rank covered, pawn covers a4 & c4 and knight covers b4. Good puzzle since it looks like Qf5+ is a blunder (Bc3xQf5) except for the fact that Bd3 is pinned. 😀

1. Qf5# taking advantage of the pin of Black's bishop by White's bishop on f1.

Qf5 . . . surprisingly hard to see. It might make the basis of a good mate in 2

I definitely wouldn't have taken the amount of time that it took me to find QF5... I would have just taken the Bishop (check), king has to go A5, mate on the next move with QC5

What if I play the rook to B8 instead of taking the pawn ? No trap it is, correct ?

Qf5# Bishop is pinned, so can't take the queen. Difficult puzzle!

Hello Sir Igor it looks like black can still save the bishop by moving the rook in B8
The pone can’t take bishop because Queen was pin by the rook
It’s just my observation let me know if I’m correct or wrong

and the blacks king can only move to a5 if you put rook to a1 it covers that square and queen covers the rook right?
