How does Apples crash detection feature work?

In September 2022 apple unveiled their new feature for iPhone 14 and apple watch series 8 known as crash detection. The feature aims to automatically contact emergency services and the users emergency contacts when it detects a you have been in a car crash and are unconscious. The emergency services will be sent a message saying: "The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone" Lets have a look at how this feature works and how it detects you've been in a crash.
2 components in the phone known as the gyroscope and the accelerometer detect motion and speed. The new accelerometer in the iPhone 14 and apple watch 8 make it capable of detecting G-force up to 256G's according to apple. No human has ever survived G force of more than 214G's for context.
GeForce isn't the only thing used to calculate if the device has been in a car crash. GPS data is combined with this to confirm if the device was moving at high speed before the high g force was detected. The microphone in the device also detects if above average noise was detected at the same time. The device also has a barometer that detects air pressure, if the cars airbags are activated this sensor will detect the change in air pressure.
The data from all these sensors is then combined to determine if a car crash is likely to have occurred, if its likely a crash has happened. The device will then trigger an emergency sos notification with an alarm to attract attention, which you have several seconds to cancel. The message will then be sent to emergency services and emergency contacts you have selected yourself. Here is a screenshot of the message that your emergency contacts will receive, it even includes a map with the location of the accident.
Overall this is a fantastic feature that will likely save many lives over the next few years. Its not without its faults though, in America there have already been reports of crash detection being activated when people went on rollercoasters. Apple have indicated they are fixing this in the next ios update, a simple work around for now is to turn your device to airplane mode before going on rides as this will prevent the emergency call being made.

this is what helped my family find my brother and his friend after they had a fatal RTC. It was the only thing that went off and helped emergency services find them. Unfortunately there was nothing that could be done to save them but they had crashed on a dark road in the sticks and the only notification that got anybody’s attention was this feature

A deer jumped out in front of me 2 weeks ago on I-35 at 75 mph and this feature really worked. By the time the car stopped spinning and landed in the ditch was connected with 911. On-Star also detected the accent so I had them on line too!

Annoying if I toss my phone in the car and calls ems and ice contacts. Because I left my phone in the car! Yes this happened today.
