The East Wind [Εὖρος ]
He came at dawn, slipping between the peaks of slumbering mountains. The trees, still dazed from winter’s stupor, rustled their leaves in recognition of his gentle footsteps. The East Wind was nothing like his brother, the North Wind, who tore roofs from houses and howled through chimneys. In his palms, he carried the scent of distant seas, the warmth of the first sunrays, and the faint chime of Buddhist bells lost in the mists of foreign lands.
The village in the valley stirred. Elders squinted on doorsteps, catching his tender caresses on their faces, while children raced him along the riverbank, laughing, until he stirred flocks of cranes sleeping in the reeds into flight. Even the river, still ice-bound the day before, shattered its chains under his breath and burst into song.
“You’re late,” whispered the willow by the ford, its buds unfurling.
“No,” replied the East Wind, brushing its branches. “I arrived precisely on time.”
He did not stay long. By noon, his silhouette had dissolved into the haze above the fields, leaving a trail of snowdrops and hopes in his wake. But the village remembered: where the East Wind had passed, even stones learned to bloom…
