I wouldn't call myself a sentimental person. In many ways, in fact, I am the total opposite.

However, this song never ceases to bring me to tears: every single time I listen to it. I am not sure why. Perhaps it is the heart-breaking tune. Perhaps it is because of the first impression that its wallpaper has imprinted upon my mind. Perhaps it is just the female singer's voice. For whatever reason, the images that run through my mind as I listen to this song follow the same general pattern:

1) Some person whom I know (and deeply care about) in my own life, who I know for a fact has been abused.

2) A distraught toddler looking through the burning ruins of his former home, looking for anything that might explain why mama and papa are no longer with him to read him bedtime stories, tickle him until his belly hurts from laughing, or wipe away his tears when he cries.

3) The sobbing widow, bent over her dead warrior husband's casket, at his funeral, as his equally devastated brothers-in-arms look on, tears streaming from their otherwise stony faces.

Every time these images are awoken in my mind, I am reminded that war has real consequences, that affect real people.
-It is not a chess board of strategic maneuvering; it is the systematic and irrevocable scarring of the minds of entire generations.
-It is not the glorious, thundering march of heroes; it is the destruction of hope.
-Last but not least, even at its best, war is not the majestic unfurling of banners of victory for everyone; someone somewhere has lost their soul-mate, their best friend, the person who made life worth living for everyone around them.

Truly, war does not determine who is right: only who is left.
