Even in Buddhist culture, gurus are a component of the journey on the path of cessation of suffering. Swami as well. Both cultures utilise these individuals in different ways to foster their individual skills for the betterment of the collective. For example, gurus are able to teach, like yourself; coach, and even direct or hold government officials positions. Swamis, a little bit different, are seen as innovative minds, creative, abstract, and different but still fully capable of being spiritually grounded. However, swamis won't explain, or have gotten to a stance where they Don't have to explain themselves. But are followed, like trend setters: fashion, lifestyle, and foods.
It shouldn't go without saying that these terms are abused by popular culture and taken to scam people via the internet, flyers at the grocery store, or through word of mouth. Because the religious world has only one policeman, the creator, these terms, once reverence, are used for illicit capital gains through followership, beyond lavish lifestyles and a spread of adharma.
